Description
For many students, one of the most challenging parts of essay writing is developing well-supported paragraphs. All too often, students include a line or two of evidence plucked from a source along with a brief explanation (if any), providing relatively weak support for their point. Writing a well-developed essay requires that students know how to identify and use evidence effectively – and have a toolbox full of strategies for elaboration.
The essay lessons are designed to help students develop essays that incorporate solid evidence and thorough elaboration. Starting with a unit that digs into different types of evidence, students then move to a unit on elaborative strategies, followed by work on text-based opinion essays, text-based informational essays, and literary analyses. Each unit leads students through the process of using evidence and elaboration to develop paragraphs and essays that stand out above the rest.
