The Strong Writer Series is designed to help students grow as writers as they learn the art of writing strong, coherent paragraphs, then complete well-developed essays, followed by essays that are built with solid evidence and effective elaboration. With this in mind, schools have flexibility to select where to begin with students. For those students who struggle to write solid text-based paragraphs, the Paragraphs edition is the place to begin.

What Works Clearinghouse includes recommendations for improving elementary students’ writing. The following four recommendations are supported with the Strong Writers Series:
- Provide daily time for students to write.
- Teach students to use the writing process for a variety of purposes.
- Teach students to become fluent with handwriting, spelling, sentence construction, typing, and word processing.
- Create an engaged community of writers.
The Strong Writers Series includes structured lessons that are written in the Gradual Release of Responsibility so that students are able to learn, practice with guidance, and practice independently as they master the content.
